Questions & Answers on Fasting
Is it permissible to wear a pain patch while fasting?
A pain patch is used externally, hence, will not invalidate the fast. You may fast in the month of Ramadhaan while using the pain patch. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
One of my friends has a problem with his kidneys he only has the one kidney, so this means he has to drink lots of water, which was advised for his condition by the doctors. Please could you tell me if he has to still keep his fasts during Ramadan?
This depends on the seriousness of your friend’s condition. If it is possible for him to fast without adversely affecting his health, then he should fast. However, if fasting will aggravate his condition and there is fear of his condition deteriorating, then he should not fast. He will compulsorily be obliged to make Qadhaa of the missed fasts. It will be advisable for him to wait until such a time of the year when the days are short, thus, facilitating easiness in keeping the Qadhaa. However, if this is also not possible and he has no hope of recovering his health, then he should pay the Fidya for every missed fast.
a)Last Ramadhan I broke around 3 fasts because of severe headache (migraine). I cannot explain to you how painful they are, only Allah knows how much i suffer. My migraines are triggered due to hunger and if i dont treat it with medicine, then i keep throwing up till i have nothing left in my stomach. I get weak and then cant fast the following morning thats why my husband forces me to break my fast as soon as the attack starts. What would the kaffara be?
b)I’m pregnant now and wont be able to fast this Ramadhan, should i feed two meals to a poor every day, or one meal to two poor people per fast i dont keep? Besides doing this, would i need to make up these fasts later when i can or not? please let me know, i’m confused.
You will only have to keep a Qadhaa fast in place of the 3 fasts you broke.
Regarding fasting during your pregnancy, it will be permissible for you not to fast or to break a fast if this will harm you or the child. A possible solution for you is to take your medicine in the form of an injection, as this does not break the fast. (Ahsanul Fatawa vol.4 pg.432). You will have to make Qadhaa of any fasts you break or miss in Ramadhaan, by keeping another fast later on. You cannot feed poor, as you have the ability to make up the fasts later on. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
I’m 15 and during the fasting hours i have no idea how many days but i masturbated and i have no idea what to do. i gave up and i repented but im unsure about what i did during the ramadhaan.
Alhamdulillah, it is very encouraging to note that you have given up this evil action. May Allah Ta’ala keep you steadfast, Aameen. You should use your discretion to determine how many such fasts were broken from the time you became Baaligh (mature). You should act according to whatever the dominant part of your mind tells you. Thereafter, make Qadhaa only of the number of fasts you had broken. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
My wife missed about 20 days during Ramadhan 5 years ago due to the imminent birth of our child and due to doctor’s advice because it may complicate things. Also the last 2 years, she did not fast because she was on her menstrual cycle. Does she have to make up all the fasts? She does not mind making them up but she is a weak person and fasting in Ramadhan is already difficult for her. Can we pay for the fasts and feed the poor instead?
When a person misses a fardh fast, he/she is required to make this up as soon as possible. (Qadhaa). If he/she is unable to do so presently, he/she may delay the Qadhaa until he/she is able to fulfill it. If he/she has a very limited life expectancy and fears he/she will not be able to recover sufficiently to make these up before his/her death, he/she may pay Fidyah, in lieu of each fast, an amount equivalent to Sadaqatul Fitr. This must be given to someone deserving of Zakaah. Your wife’s situation does not seem to be so serious. We suggest that she make up one fast every week. Furthermore, this may be done in winter when the days are short so as to make it even easier. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Bilaal Cassim]
1) If wife touches the private parts of husband and erose him and during this if simen comes out of husband penis. Is it called mastarbation and is that a sin in islam,if so what penalty i have to pay. and if the husband did the same to wife and eroses her is that a sin. 2)If one had intercouse with his wife at night after taraveeh prayer,do he has to take gusal before doing sahr.
1) Your question does not state whether the act was performed during fasting or not.If it was during fasting, it is prohibited. However in normal circumstances it is not prohibited, irrespective of what emits therefrom.
2) It is not neccessary to take ghusal before sehri. The bath may taken after sehri before the fajar prayer.
[Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
When I talk to my fiancé while I’m fasting, my semen comes out unintentionally. Does that make me brake my fast? Is the only solution for me not to talk to her while fasting? By the way, I talk to her on the phone.
It is not permissible for you to talk to her, whether you are fasting or not. By ‘unintentionally’ we understand that you did not do anything physically. In that case, the fast has not broken. In future, one should adopt extreme precaution in such matters. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Moulana Imraan Vawda]
Is it permissible to cut one’s hair and nails while fasting or does one have to wait until sunset ?
It is permissible to cut one’s hair and nails while fasting. [Moulana Imraan Vawda]
My wife masturbated me while we were fasting. Is the fast makrooh or not valid? Since I climaxed should I refast or would it suffice to make ghusl? What should she do?
By ‘climaxed’, we understand that ejaculation took place. In such a case, the husband’s fast has broken. He has to make sincere Tawbah and make Qadhaa of that fast. The wife’s fast is valid, but is tainted due to her action. She should make earnest Tawbah for her action. Ghusl was Waajib on the husband, but not on the wife. (Shaami voll.1 pg.404; HM Saeed) and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Moulana Imraan Vawda]
During Fast,If it is very necessory to take Ghusal-e-Janabat then what will be the method bucause we cannot gargle during fast.I have heard that gargle is must in ghusal-e-janabat?
You are permitted to wrinse the mouth whilst fasting. However, extra care should be taken to ensure that the water does not reach the throat. Wrinsing the mouth is sufficient for Ghusl. [Mufti Muhammad Kadwa]
After having an erection, I discovered clear sticky liquid (Mazi) whilst fasting.does this break my Fast.do I have to do Qadha?
Emergence of Mazi does not break the fast. No Qadhaa is required. [Moulana Imraan Vawda]
I was working(melting plastic) inhaled its smell. Will this break my fast? And please tell me the conditions when our fast will me invalid?
If this gave off fumes, and you intentionally inhaled it, then the fast will be broken. [Moulana Imraan Vawda]
After Sehri and Fajr salaah, if you go back to sleep, thereafter when you wake up, is it permissable to brush ones teeth with toothpaste. Does this nullify the fast?
One should not use toothbrush and toothpaste during the fast. One should rather use a Miswaak. However, if somebody did use toothpaste, but nothing went down the throat, the fast had not broken. However, it should not be done in future. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Moulana Imraan Vawda]
Whilst fasting is it necessary to avoid the inhalation of talcum powder and spray emanating from an aerosol eg a deodorant? What I mean is when applying these things they always DO get into your mouth and nose (although not a substantial amount). It’s impossible to avoid it unless you cover your face. So, do these things break the fast?
In principle, anything going down the throat while fasting nullifies the fast. If the talcum powder or aerosol does not go down the throat, it will not nullify the fast. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
I am trying to make up my qada fasts of ramadaan of the past years. I also suffer from Urinary bladder infection. I have to drink lot of water. Sometimes due to being busy or not rmembering to drink I feel a bit burning on the urinary part. Normally I make the intention of fasting at night, sometimes when I wake up in the morning I feel that I wouldn’t be able to fast because of my problem. So, then I change my mind and drink something. When I was fasting that time the sun was setting between 21:30-22:00 and the fajr was at 1:41am. I want to know whether this was a sin and whether I have to make a kuffaraa of this.
Since you had a valid excuse for breaking your fast, you would not be sinful and Kaffaarah also would not apply. Mere Qadhaa will suffice. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Muhammad Kadwa]
Am I allowed to keep my fast and go for a blood test?
A blood test does not invalidate fast. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
My wife is seven months pregnant.Alhamdullilah, she is well. Ramadaan is in two weeks time.Should she fast in Ramadaan or is it permissible for her to fast afterwards.
Your wife will be excused for not fasting during Ramadhaan due to being pregnant. She may make Qadhaa (make up) for the missed fasts later. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best .[Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
This ramadaan I want to sit in a I’tikaaf. I have taken last 3 weeks off. But still in the last week I have to come to office for half a day, that’s what my employer has said because its closing of the month for the company. What I want to know is that can I still sit in itikaaf and do 9 and a half day and make up after ramadaan for a day? Is this allowed or should I not do it at all? Can I sit in itikaaf even if my parents wouldn’t allow me to? I read in Kitaabus sawm about itikaaf, that it is makrooh for person in itikaaf to maintain total silence. I don’t understand this. If I am to be alone in my room with whom should I talk? I thought we shouldn’t talk idly during itikaaf. Or does it mean that if someone asks me something I can reply and that I can also ask someone to give me for e.g. food?
1. The Sunnah I’tikaaf covers the entire period of the last ten days of Ramadhaan. We suggest you sit for Nafl I’tikaaf instead. Nafl I’tikaaf can even be for a little while.
2. If your parents prevent you from I’tikaaf and the I’tikaaf is not compulsory upon you, you should comply with their wishes.
3. Silence is Makrooh if the silence is maintained as a form of Ibaadat as was prevalent in the past nations.
[Mufti Muhammad Kadwa]
If a girl starts her period for the first time in Ramadan, what should she do? I am asking u this question because I cant seem to reconcile two contradictory rulings found in the classical fiqh manuals. Firstly they say that it is haraam for a woman on her period to fast and also it is haram for her to act like a fasting person but then they also sat that if a child attains puberty he/she should refrain from all those things which invalidate the fast (i.e act like a fasting person). Please kindly explain.
The Fuqaha have cited the following explanation for the above masala. A girl who attains puberty (during the day of the days of Ramadaan) now becomes eligible for fasting. Since her condition of menses will not permit her to keep her fast, she should at least act like a fasting person. Similarly would be the case of a mature woman who experiences her menses whilst fasting. i.e. she would act like a fasting person.
Whilst a woman who has her menses prior to the fasting day commencing is not eligible in Shariah to fast. Therefore, Shariah does not instruct her to act like a fasting person. (Hidaya Vol.1 Pg.225) and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
Please could you answer the following question for me please: 1) If a person is in a state of janabah at suhoor time and does not do ghusl before sunrise and then proceeds to fast the following day in the month of Ramadhan and does ghusl later in the morning, is the fast valid? If this is wrong but the person did not realise they were doing wrong, what do they need to do to make up? 2) After childbirth if a woman continues to bleed for 3 months when does she need to start praying salat again and does she need to fast in Ramadhan if she continues to bleed? 3) Is it allowed for a woman to hold (without gloves) her husbands bare arms in public as they walk together if his arms are not covered by clothing?
1. The fast is valid
2. After 40 days from childbirth, she should commence performing Salaat and she may fast also. 3. The practice is against shame and modesty. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
My father has diabetes, has not been fasting for many years. what should he do to make up for that?
He should endeavour to keep Qadhaa, failing which, grain equivalent to the amount stipulated for Sadaqatul Fitr in place of every fast that he missed should be given to a poor person. Alternatively, he could feed one poor person with two complete meals for each fast that he missed. In the Shari’ah, this is known as Fidyah. It is also permissible for him to given the value of the grain in cash. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
Whilst fasting which of the following break the fast and which do not, Eye drops, eardrops, nose drops, and asthma inhaler?
I am an Aalim working in a hospital here in the U.K. I am preparing a fact sheet for Muslim Patients about medication during Ramadhan. I am aware of the Fataawa our Ulama and Mufti Sahebs have given saying: Eye drops do not break fast. Eardrops do break fast. Nose drops do break fast. Asthma Inhaler does break fast. The problem I face is that in another hospital, a similar guidance sheet was issued to Muslims and the Imam there gave advice that it is O.K. to take all of the above during Fast. I decided to look into this further. As I understand it, the underlying principle is that anything which benefits the stomach will break the fast, (correct me if I’m wrong). I’ve asked a few practicing Muslim Dr.’s and they say, ‘Our Fatwa regarding Ear drops does not make sense as it has no connection with the stomach, therefore it should not break the fast.’ ‘The Fatwa regarding eye drops does not make sense as it has a connection or a passage to the stomach, therefore should break the fast.’ ‘The Fatwa regarding the salbutamol inhaler does not make sense as it goes through the throat into the veins and circulates in the blood and does not benefit the stomach, therefore should not break the fast.’
In order to clearly understand the response to your query, one needs to understand that some Jurists, after much consideration and research, have concluded that when any liquid, food or medicine reaches, ingests and settles in one of the three considered cavaties of the human body viz. the throat, the stomach, the intestines, nullifies the fast.
It is important to note that the Jurists have also identified other apertures and pathways which lead to any of the above three major cavaties. Some of these apertures are the ears, nose, and the anal aperture. Of note is the fact that the medical profession has a slight disagreement with the Fuqaha with regards to:-
* The ear: whilst some Jurists considered the outer ear to have a direct pathway to the throat, subsequently reaching the stomach, the E.N.T experts are of the opinion that there is no link. Their view is that the only time when any liquid will pass through from the outer ear to the middle ear is when the tympanic membrane (eardrum) is perforated. * Regarding this difference, contemporary Jurists like Mufti Rafi Uthmani (D.B) strongly advise that the views of the E.N.T experts of our time be accepted, since there is no certainty with regards to the ear having a passage to the throat. We should therefore refer this matter to the medical experts. (Refer to Dhaabitul-mufattiraat fi majaalit-tadaawi p.g 54)
* The eyes: the medical profession clearly state that a narrow duct links up the eye cavity with the throat via the nose. Regarding this difference Hazrat Mufti Rafi Uthmani Saheb explains that:- = Ahadith have proven that the use of surma and/or eye drops does not nullify the fast. (One should bear in mind that after something is clearly proven from the Quraan or the Ahaadith, one is oblidged to accept it whether it makes sense to him or not) additionally, this duct is so narrow that whatever passes through it from the eye is (insignifant and) negligible. ( Ibid pg.59)
As far as the inhaler is concerned, in the light of the above one can safely conclude that all medication taken by inhalation necessarily pass through the throat before they eventually settle in the lungs, thus nullifying the fast. Additionally, some of this medication also finds its way to the stomach. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Moulana Na’eem Motala]
If a woman sits in itikaaf during Ramadan in her house, can she have a gusl? eg for Jumma?
If she is sitting in Sunnah or Waajib I’tikaaf, she may not have Ghusl except when necessary like in the case of termination of Haydh, etc. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Muhammad Kadwa]
While fasting, I went for a CT scan. I was informed that I will not have to take anything orally for this procedure. However, I was given some medicine through IV. Did this invalidate my fast?
The fast is still valid. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Moulana Imraan Vawda]
Last night I got up for Sehri at 5 am and was having my food when a glance at my computer screen showed the time as 7 am(the fajr azan is at 6:31 am). I realised that the clock that I followed was running late by two hours. It was dark outside and I could not make out what the time was.I forsook my food immediately as it was and continued with the fast. I had set my intention for fast in advance. Will my fast be valid. Should I repeat my fast? Please advice.
The fast is not valid. You must make qadhaa (make up) for that fast. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
If a woman is on a contraceptive, can she continue to use it so not to miss fasts in Ramadhaan? the contraceptive is used for medical purposes and not to prevent a child-not married .
If an unmarried female is on a contraceptive for medical reasons, she may continue its use as that will be of dual benefit to her, medical as well as to be able to fast. If she does not have to take it for medical reasons then it is advisable for her not to do so as that is disturbing the natural cycle which may have health implications. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]

In principle, a pregnant person is excused from the Fardh fasting of Ramadhaan. She may make up for the missed fasts later.
It is permissible for a fasting person to have a blood test. That does not invalidate the fast. Similarly, if there is a dire need for an internal check, that too does not invalidate the fast. You should advise your gynaecologist on that. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]

Being a Shafie, was my fast valid if I accidently followed the hanafi sehri ending time (which is earlier)? I am from Malaysia and studying in UK. Do I have to perform qada’? JazakAllah Khair for your attention.
There is no difference of opinion in the terminating time of Sehri and commencing time for Fajr Salaat.
All the scholars are unanimous that Sehri ends upon the commencing of Subh-e-Saadiq (break of dawn) when the horizontal light in the sky appears. Fajr time commences at Subh-e-Saadiq. Your fasts were valid and you do not have to make Qadhaa of your fasts. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
I was wondering if brushing with miswaak allowed (which has a taste to it), why isnt brushing with tooth paste allowed?
It is permissible to make miswak while fasting. To use tooth paste in the state of fasting is Makrooh (disliked). The minimum taste in the miswak is inlike the strong taste in the paste. Furthermore the paste is a solid substance and liquidifies more in the mouth thereby having the potential of going down the throat. [Mufti E. Desai]

When is the proper time for iftar, right after sunset, or a few minutes later?
A difference of opinion exists in our town regarding the exact time of Iftaar. Some are of the opinion that it is necessary to open fast immediately after sunset based on the Hadith of Bukhari that ‘people will continue in prosperity so long as they make Ta’jeel (be quick) in breaking the fast.’ Others are of the opinion that as a matter of precaution, the fast should be opened a few minutes after actual sunset, as the time in the Muazzin’s clock or the perpetual timetable, may not be absolutely correct. Kindly comment.
The Fuqahaa have stated that it is Waajib to exercise precaution in breaking fast. (Tahtaawi; Karachi pg.370). Ibn Nujaym states, ‘Ta’jeel (to be quick) which is desired in breaking fast is before the stars appear.’ (Bahrur Raaiq vol.4 pg.292) In view of the above, it is not necessary to break fast immediately after sunset in order to achieve the virtue mentioned in the Hadith. The virtue will still be achieved even though there is a slight delay.
The Hadith of Bukhari referred to in your questionnaire is explained by Ibn Hajr (Rahmatullaahi Alayhi) in Fathul Baari (vol.4 pg.191) as follows: ‘The Christians and Jews used to delay their fast until the stars were apparent, hence, we should contradict them, i.e. we should not delay to that extent.’
Furthermore, we have queried the matter with the relevant experts, they too are of the opinion that the timetables are not accurate and there is a variation of at least two (2) minutes. Therefore, our advise is to exercise precaution by waiting at least five (5) minutes after the given time in our perpetual timetable. And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
I am an asthma patient. Is it permissible for me to use the inhaler during fasting? The inhaler contains salbutamol (liquid medication). If it is not permissible, what should I do when I get an asthma attack during fasting?

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]

A female starts menstruating while fasting. What if she stops menstruating during fasting? How should she conduct herself?
If her menses commenced while fasting, she can eat (not in public). If her menses stopped while fasting, she should abstain from eating, drinking, etc. but (in both instances) make up for the day by keeping a Qadhaa fast after Ramadaan. (Aalamgiri vol.1 pg.214; Rashidiyya)
I am an asthma patient. Is it permissible for me to use the inhaler during fasting? The inhaler contains salbutamol (liquid medication). If it is not permissible, what should I do when I get an asthma attack during fasting?
Since the inhaler contains a medication (salbutamol), the use of it in the state of fasting will invalidate the fast. We advise you take medication at the time of Sahri to avoid an asthma attack. However, taking blood tests during fasting is permissible and that does not invalidate the fast. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best. [Mufti Ebrahim Desai]
Does the following situation allow a person to be exempt from fasting during Ramadhan? A woman delivered a baby about a month ago through a ceassarean operation.
A woman delivered a baby about a month ago through a ceassarean operation. The doctor said that the operation wound may take upto 6 months to recover. She is also breast-feeding the baby. She has been adviced to keep herself healthy with proper intake of food. Since Ramadan is commencing after 1 month, is it permissible for her to miss her fasts in the month of Ramadan and make up for it later. Please advice.
Allah Ta’ala says in the Qur’aan, ‘If a person is sick (whilst in Ramadhaan) or on a journey, then complete fast on other days (besides Ramadhaan). If by not eating there is harm feared to either the woman or her childn, it will be permissible for her to continue eating and keep Qadhaa of Ramadhaan whenever she is able to. and Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
