Getting My Body Waxed by a Non-Muslim ?
She has very fast hair growth and all other methods have been tried but to no avail. Her hair has become thick and ugly; with all other hair-removal methods, her hair starts growing just after a few hours, is very sharp, and irritates her a lot. She is going to get married soon and is very frustrated and embarrassed. Is she allowed? Otherwise, in the future she may have problems in her intimate relation with her husband.
It goes without saying that a Muslim woman is encouraged to appear neat and tidy in front of her husband. A Muslim woman is not allowed to uncover her ?awrah (Arabic for: parts of the body that must be covered) except in case of necessity. A woman can use any safe method to remove unwanted hair. She can do so by herself and by the help of her husband.
Responding to your question, Wael Shihab, a Shari ?ah researcher at Al-Azhar University, states,
Regarding your question about waxing body hair, Islam generally encourages Muslims to appear neat, tidy, and well-groomed; this applies equally to males and females.
Greater emphasis in this matter, however, has been placed on married couples more than others; Ibn ?Abbas said, “I prepare myself for my wife, and she prepares herself for me!” The reason for this is not hard to comprehend: Such appearance may go a long away in contributing toward marital stability and fulfillment as the spouses are supposed to serve as garments of protection for each other.
In keeping in line with this spirit, we find the Islamic sources laying greater stress in recommending the wife to appear attractive before her husband; the only limitation applicable here is resorting to practices that may amount to direct altering and tampering with Allah’s creation, for such practices are clearly forbidden in Islam.
Given the above, you can wax your body hair yourself, or your husband can help if you like. Also, there are different methods available in the market for this. You need to choose whatever is easier and most convenient for you. There is some liquid available in the market that can be used easily. There are also some shaving tools for women, may be one of these is easier for you than waxing.
As for having some other woman to do the waxing for you, Muslim scholars are of the opinion that a woman may uncover her hair, face, hands, neck, shoulders, legs from below her knees, as well as feet in front of other women. It should be clear that a Muslim woman is not allowed to uncover her ?awrah except in case of necessity such as necessary medical treatment.
Therefore, it is not allowed to have another woman — whether a Muslim or a non-Muslim — to do the waxing for you if this will lead to exposing the ?awrah, as this is not an issue that would justify exposing your ?awrah.
Sister, try to think about convenient methods that would help you without exposing sensitive parts of your body to other women unnecessarily.
Moreover, London-based Muslim scholar and da?iyah Zienab Mostafa adds,
The least that can be said about showing a women’s ?awrah before another woman is between the navel and knee, it is called?awrah mughalazhah or “significant ?awrah.” This area can be shown only in case of ABSOLUTE necessity.
Reading your question, I could say that if it continues to be a serious problem that causes ongoing irritations and will endanger marriage, then you might get your body permanently waxed (by laser or other available means). This will be a once-and-for-all solution that is permissable in Islam because of a real need making it necessary for such an action.
