Life of Prophet Ebrahim(a.s.)
HADHRAT EBRAHIM (Alaihis-Salaam)
The reference to Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) in the Qur’aan.
The message of guidance contained in the Qur’aan is for the ‘Millat-e-Ebrahim’ [the nation of Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)]. Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) is mentioned often, in both the ‘Makki’ and ‘Madani’ Surahs. Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) is mentioned in 25 Surahs and 63 verses.

Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)’s Father
In the records of history and in the Tauraat, Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)’s father is mentioned as ‘Taarikh’, but the Qur’aan mentions him as ‘Aazar’. The commentators and historians have researched the matter, but their efforts were futile. Some tried to interpret the Arabic word ‘ab’ (father) figuratively. But the clear path has been laid down by the Qur’aan. Whether ‘Aazar’ was his real name or a mere title, we should not debate the matter any further.
The other Ambiyaa in the Era of Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)
Incidents regarding the life of Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) and those of his sons, Hadhrat Ismaeel and Hadhrat Ishaaq (Alaihis-Salaam) and his cousin, Hadhrat Loot (Alaihis-Salaam) are mentioned in the Qur’aan. The details of these three Ambiyaa-prophets are mentioned in the chronicles of Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam).
The Great Rank of Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)
The great rank which Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) occupies among the Ambiyaa (Alaihis-Salaam) is mentioned at various places of the Qur’aan; sometimes briefly and sometimes in much detail. By the mention of his various habits and qualities, a vivid description of his personality is gained.
According to the Tauraat, Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) lived in the village of ‘Adar’ in Iraq. He was from the people of Faddaan who were idol-worshippers. It is mentioned in the Gospel of Barnabas that his father was a carpenter, who used to make and sell idols to the various tribes.
Allaah guided Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) from the beginning. He was endowed with the insight of the futility of these idols, that they can neither see nor hear, nor can they cause harm or benefit. He realised the there was no difference between these idols and the other wooden toys, utensils, etc. All day Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) used to watch his father fashion the faces, carve out the eyes, ears, body, etc. of the idols. Then Aazar used to sell them to the people. Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) addressed himself,
“How could this be Allaah or the image of Allaah?”
Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) realised that the people were so involved in the worship of idols, the stars and everything else in the universe, that their hearts remained unaware about the power, unity or existence of the Almighty Allaah. Nothing was more confusing to them than the unity of Allaah. Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) gathered courage and placing his trust in Allaah put forward the message of truth by announcing,
Oh people! How can you worship the same lifeless wood which you have carved with your tools – which, if you do not like it you break it and make another. Yet, you still believe that this wood has the power to harm or benefit anyone. Stop this senseless talk! Hymn songs of the unity of Allaah; prostrate yourselves to the True Sovereign, who is your Creator, My Creator, and the Creator of the entire universe.
But the people did not take heed as they were deprived of true insight, they ridiculed the eminent Nabi of Allaah, and only became more rebellious. Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) saw that the greatest gathering of idolatry take place in his own house. Aazar’s workshop and idol-worshipping rituals became the pivot of the people. Therefore it was natural that he should begin his invitation to the truth at home. Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) addressed his father, Aazar,
Lo! Ebrahim said to his father Azar: “Take You idols for gods? For I see you and your people in manifest error.”

[An’am 6/74]
The advice of Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) did not deter his father. Instead of accepting the truth, Aazar began to threaten his son, that if he does not stop criticising the idols, then he will stone him to death. When Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) realised the matter was out of control, he pondered over the matter. He had to respect his father, but he also had to obey the Divine commands, safeguard the truth and fulfill his obligations to Allaah. His reaction reflected his high status. He did not return his father’s harsh words with harshness, nor did he adopt a sarcastic attitude, instead he replied gently and politely,
Behold, he said to his father, “Oh my father! Why worship that which does not hear and see, and cannot profit you in any way? Oh my father! To me has come the knowledge which has not reached you. So follow me; I will guide you to a way that is even and straight. Oh my father! Serve not Satan; for Satan is a rebel against (Allaah) Most Gracious. O my father! Fear lest a penalty afflict you from (Allaah) Most Gracious, so that You become to Satan a friend.”

Fear lest a penalty afflict you from (Allaah) Most Gracious, so that You become to Satan a friend.”
[Maryam, 19/43-45]
The father replied, “Do you hate my gods, O Ebrahim? If you forbear not, I will indeed stone you; now get away from me for a good long while!” Ebrahim said: “Peace be on you; I will pray to my Rabb for your forgiveness; for He is to me Most Gracious. And I will turn away from you (all) and from those whom you invoke besides Allaah; I will call on my Rabb; perhaps, by my prayer to my Rabb I shall not be unblessed.”
[19/ 46-48]
Behold, he said to his father and his people: “What worship you?” They said: “We worship idols, and we remain constantly in attendance on them.” He said: “Do they listen to you when you call (on them), or do you good or harm?” They said: “No, but we found our father doing this (what we do).” He said: “Do you then see whom you have been worshipping – you and your father before you.”
[Shuraa 26/71-76]
My dear father, if this is your reaction, then peace be upon you. I cannot leave the true Deen-religion of Allaah and its preaching, nor can I in any condition worship idols. Today I will leave you, but even in my absence, I will continue to beg Allaah to forgive you, so that you may be guided and saved from Divine punishment.
The Qur’aan states
“Ebrahim was indeed a model, devout obedient to Allaah, (and) true in faith, and he joined not gods with Allaah. He showed his gratitude for the favours of Allaah, who chose him, and guided him to a straight way. And We gave him good in this world, and he will be, in the Aakhiraat- hereafter, in the ranks of the righteous”.
[Nahl- 16/120-122]
And… “Ebrahim was not a Jew nor yet a Christian, but he was true in faith and bowed his will to Allaah’s (which is Islaam), and he joined no gods with Allaah.”
[Al-Imran 3/67]
Inviting the People to Islaam
When Aazar refused to accept guidance or to see reason in what his son was saying, Ebrahim(Alaihis-Salaam) left him. He did not limit his preaching to his own house any more, but began to preach to all the people as well. The people refused to leave the religion of their ancestors. They became blind and deaf just like their false deities. Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) asked them,
Behold he said to his people, “Serve Allaah and fear Him; that will be best for you – if you understand! For you worship idols besides Allaah, and you invent falsehood. The things you worship besides Allaah have no power to give you sustenance. Then seek you sustenance from Allaah. Serve Him, and be grateful to Him; to Him will be your return.”

The things you worship besides Allaah have no power to give you sustenance. Then seek you sustenance from Allaah. Serve Him, and be grateful to Him; to Him will be your return.”
[Ankabut 29/16-17]
They said: “Have you brought us the truth, or are you one of those who jest?’ he said: “No, your Rabb is the Rabb of the heavens and the earth. He who created them (from nothing); and I am witness to this (truth).”
[Ambiyaa 21/55-56]
“How do these idols cause benefit and harm to you?
They replied:
“We do not wish to become involved in such arguments. Our forefathers have worshipped them and we are doing the same.”
Then in a very special way Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) turned his attention to Allaah and told the people,
I regard all your idols as my enemy (meaning that I fearlessly declare war against them), they cannot inflict any harm on me as my Master, who is the Creator of the entire universe, who has created me and guided me onto the straight path, who sustains me, who cures me when ill, who has granted me life and will grant me death, and who will forgive my sins on the day of Qiyamaat. In His presence I will continue to pray,
My Creator, grant me the strength to make the proper decisions, include me among the righteous ones, make me truthful and include me among the heirs of the gardens of Jannat.
This had no effect on the hearts of the people, nor that of Aazar to accept the truth.

Worship of Stars
Together with idol-worship, the people of Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) also used to worship the stars. They believed that the life and death of mankind, success, failure, and the movement of the entire universe were under the control of the stars. They believed it was essential to keep the heavenly bodies pleased by worshipping them.
Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) realised just as he had exposed the faults of their earthly deities, similarly, it was necessary to convince the people, that this belief about the heavenly bodies was also totally baseless. The idolaters feared their hand-crafted idols to such an extent, that they believed that whoever criticized their idols were doomed. Therefore it was no easy task to turn such people away from the worship of the lofty stars. Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) chose a strange yet interesting method to convince the people.
The Qur’aan says,
“So also did we show Ebrahim the power and the laws of the heavens and the earth, that he might (with understanding) have certitude. When the night covered him over, he saw a star. He said: “this is my Rabb.” But when it set, he said: “I love not those who set.” when he saw the moon rising in splendour, he said: “This is my Rabb.” But when the moon set, he said: “Unless my Rabb guide me, I shall surely be among those who go astray.”

[Anaam 75/77]
He looked at the star and said ;”This is my Rabb” Note that he did not believe for a moment that the stars were his Rabb. He said it by way of illustration to the people. As soon as day broke, the star disappeared and did not have the ability to remain for even a moment longer, not could it show itself for its worshippers. Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) illustrated this to the idol worshippers by stating:-“I do not like those that disappear.”
Then he looked at the sky and saw the moon shining in its grandeur. He said: “This is my Rabb.” Due to its brilliance it lit up the earth, but as dawn approached and the sun began to rise, the moonlight began to fade and disappear. Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) refuted the possibility of the moon being a deity, in this manner in the hope that the people will inevitably see the futility of regarding it as a deity and realise the Oneness of Allaah.
After the starlit night had passed, the glittering stars and brilliant moon faded because the magnificent face of the sun had emerged, lighting up the earth with it’s radiance.
The sun continued to burn brightly the entire day. At dusk the time came for the sun to sink into the west. The horizon gradually darkened until the sun had totally disappeared. Now the time had come for Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) to re-announce the truth, and silence the people. He addressed the people.
The Qur’aan states,
“When he saw the sun rising in splendour, he said, “This is my Rabb, this is the greatest (of all).” But when the sun set, he said: “Oh my people! I am (now) free from your (guilt) of giving partners to Allaah. For me, I have set my face, firmly and truly, towards Him who created the heavens and the earth, and never shall I give partners to Allaah.”

[Anaam-78/79]
If the stars are to be regarded as deities, how is it that they are so transitory? why do they not shine forever? Why is the brilliance of the moon rendered invisible by the sun? Oh people! I am free from your polytheist beliefs and disgusted with your life of idolatry. Indeed I will only turn to that one Allaah, who is the Creator of the earth and the skies. I am Hanif (the one on the true Deen-religion), not an idol-worshipper.
The people realised that he had destroyed all their arguments. How could they argue against his strong proofs?.They were utterly helpless. But instead of accepting the call of truth, they began to fight with Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) and threatened him that their false deities will definitely take revenge for his disgracing them and that he will have to endure their punishment.
Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) explained to them again about how foolish it was to have faith in that which is so powerless. He warned them that they were fearlessly disobeying Allaah and associating partners with Allaah without even a single proof. He implored them to believe in one Allaah and to have the security of the protector of the worlds instead of fearing the idols who are themselves helpless against everything and everyone
Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) tried to convince Aazar and the people to abstain from idol-worship. He took pains to make them believe that these idols can neither harm nor benefit anyone. And that their priests have wrongly threatened them that if they forsake their idols, then the idols will become angry and destroy them. These Idols cannot even avert a calamity. But this did not affect their hearts. They did not in any way refute the strength of their idols. Their priests and chieftains continued to enforce their false beliefs. They prohibited the people from paying any attention to Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)’s advices.
Initially , he said to them that he will secretly play a trick on their idols, hinting at them that if their idols have the power to stop him then they should try to.
In spite of such indisputable proofs the people refused to abandon their idolatry. One day, whilst among the people, Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) declared war by saying,
“By the Qasm of Allaah, I shall surely devise a plot against your idols, after you turn away from them.”

[Ambiyaa – 57]
The people did not pay any attention to him. Co-incidently one of their festivals approached. They insisted that Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) go along. At first Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) refused. When they insisted, then he raised his eyes to the stars and said: “I am sick.”
They thought that he was under the curse of an unlucky star. So they left him alone. When the king, the priests and all the people were involved in eating, drinking, and merry-making, Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) went to the biggest idol in the temple. He found fruit and sweetmeats laid in front of the idols.
Allaah says,
Then did he cast a glance at the stars, and he said: “I am indeed sick (at heart)!” So they turned away from him, and departed. Then did he turn to their gods and said: “Will you not eat (of the offerings before you)? What is the matter with you that you speak not ?” Then did he turn upon them, striking (them) with the right hand”.

[Saffat. 37/86-93]
“And by Allaah, I have a plan for your idols – after you go away and turn your backs.” So he broke them to pieces, (all) but the biggest of them, that they might turn (and address themselves) to it.”
[Ambiyaa-57-58]
They said: Who has done this to our gods? He must indeed be some man of impiety!” They said: “We heard a youth talk of them; he is called Ebrahim.” They said: “Then bring him before the eyes of the people, that they may bear witness.”
[Ambiyaa, 21/59-61]
They said:“Are You the one who did this to our gods, O Ebrahim?” He said: “No, this was done by – this is their biggest one! Ask them, if they can speak intelligently!” So they turned to themselves and said: “Surely you are the ones in the wrong!” Then they were confounded with shame; (they said). “You know full well that these (idols) do not speak!”
[Ambiyaa, 21/62-65]
“Did you do this to our deities, Oh Ebrahim?”
[Ambiyaa – 61-62]
Then came (the worshippers with hurried steps and faced (him). He said: “Worship you that which you have (yourselves) carved? But Allaah has created you and your handiwork!”
[Saffat, 37/94-96]
When asked about the condition of the idols, he said,
“No! Rather he did it! this big one. So ask them if they can speak?”
“No! Rather he did it! this big one. So ask them if they can speak?”
[Ambiyaa-63]
The priests were stunned by this indisputable argument. They were drowning in humiliation and had no answer to give. The truth was unveiled in the presence of the people. They witnessed such a scene for which they were not prepared.
“Assuredly You, know that they do not speak!”
“Assuredly You, know that they do not speak!”
[Ambiyaa-64-65]
Do you worship besides Allaah that which does not harm nor benefit you. Shame upon you and upon that which you worship besides Allaah. Won’t you understand?”
[Ambiyaa-67-68]
Then they came to him hurriedly. He said,
“Do you worship that which you created? Where as Allaah created you and your actions.”
“Do you worship that which you created? Where as Allaah created you and your actions.”
[Saaffaat-94/5/6]
Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)’s advice should have convinced all of them to forsake their false deities, and step onto the straight path. But the filth that polluted their hearts did not allow them to be guided. Instead they raised slogans of enmity against him.
Inviting the King to Islaam
While the people were still discussing the matter, the news reached the king. The king of Iraq was given the title ‘Neemrooz’. He was not only the ruler but proclaimed godhood to the people. He possessed intelligence, and held the Throne and they honoured and revered him even more than their idols. When Neemrooz heard of Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)’s teachings, he flew into a rage. He feared that if these teachings persisted and succeeded, then not only will his godliness and the religion of his ancestors be at stake, but the entire nation will turn against him. He thus devised a scheme to get rid of Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam).
He commanded that Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) should be brought to his court. When Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) reached the court, Neemrooz asked him,
“Why are you opposing the religion of your forefathers? Why due you not accept me as the Great Rabb?”
Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) replied,
“I worship the One Allaah! I do not ascribe partner to Him. This world and the entire universe are His creation. He is the Sovereign over everything. You are a mere mortal like the rest of us. So how can you be Allaah? How can these lifeless wooded forms be Allaah? I am on the true path, and you all have gone astray. How can I forsake the preaching of the truth and follow the artificial religion of your forefathers?”
Then Neemrooz enquired,
“Does your deity have any such powers which I do not possess?”
Nevertheless, Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) decided not to delve into the intricate philosophies of life and death, Neemrooz will have achieved his object, and Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) will not be able to put forward his message of the Truth. His object was not to argue with the people, but to convince them to believe in One Allaah.
Therefore Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) used a proof, which the people witnessed morning and evening. Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) said as stated in the Qur’aan,
Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) replied,
“My Allaah has the ability to grant life and death!”
The crooked-minded Neemrooz was not acquainted with the reality of life and death. So he said,
“I also possess the ability to give life and death!”
At that moment he commanded the executioner to behead an innocent person. The executioner immediately complied. Then Neemrooz summoned a criminal awaiting a death sentence. He said to the prisoner,
“Go! We have granted you your life.”
Then he turned to Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) and said,
“See! I too possess the ability to give life and death. so what is so special about your God?”
Allaah says,
Have You not turned your vision to one who disputed with Ebrahim about his Rabb, because Allaah has granted him power? Ebrahim said, My Rabb is he who gives life and death” He said: “I give life and death” Said Ebrahim: “But it is Allaah that causes the sun to rise from the East; You then cause it to rise from the west.” Thus was he confounded who (in arrogance) rejected faith. Nor doth Allaah give guidance to a people unjust.

[Baqara, 2/258]
Neemrooz was unacquainted with the reality of life and death, and he wished to deceive the common folk. Neemrooz could not understand that, to “grant life” meant to bring something alive from non-existence. Similarly the one who kills a person or saves him from execution is not the Rabb of death. The Rabb of death is the one who extracts the soul from the body of a person, and takes it into his possession. That is why many sword-fighters and people sentenced to death remain alive. But many others who are secure and in comfort face death, yet no power can prevent them from dying. If such was the case, then that Neemrooz who was arguing with me today would not be sitting on the throne. But the very first of his ancestors would still be reigning.
Upon hearing this Neemrooz was stunned. He could have replied in three ways, but he was trapped,
1.He could have said that he controlled the sun, causing it to rise and set. But he did not say so because the sun itself was a deity of the people.
2.He could have said,
“I do not believe that any being has created this world. The sun is a god too. I will not interfere with it.” But he did not say this, because Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) will put forward the same argument he had presented to the people, that the deity is more affected by change than its worshippers. A God cannot be so transitory. Nor does a God rise or set at certain times only.
3.He could have accepted the challenge of Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam). But he was stubborn and proud.

The Cooling of the Fire
The earthly powers came to assist Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam). His father was his bitter enemy, the public were against him, and the king of the time was enraged with humility. Their hatred and humiliation led the people to plan a terrible punishment.
However, Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) did not fret nor fear. He did not care for the taunts of the people. He remained occupied in calling the people to Allaah. At such a critical time when all earthly supports were removed, and all outward means of assistance lost Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) placed his faith in the Supporter of all who support and the Assistant of all assistants, the assistance of the One Allaah. Allaah did not abandon his high-ranking Nabi. He reduced the plots of the enemy to dust.
Neemrooz and the people made a special place for the punishment. A fire was kindled for days on end. Until even the things around it were consumed by the fire. When Neemrooz and the people were certain that Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) could never come out alive, they put him in a catapult and hurled him into the fire.
At that moment that Being who had given the fire the power to burn, commanded,
They said, “Build him a furnace, and throw him into the blazing fire!” (This failing), they then sought a stratagem against him. But We made them the one most humiliated!

[Saffat. 37/97-98]
They said, “Burn him and protect your gods. If you do (anything at all)!” We said: “O Fire! Be You cool, and (a means of ) safety for Ebrahim!”
[68/69]
Do not let the effects of your heat touch Ebrahim! In spite of all the elements of combustion being present, be cool on him.
At that moment the fire became “Cool and Tranquil” for Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam). His enemy could not harm him in the least.
This is the Greatness of Faith and this is the Help that Allaah has promised to those who place their total trust in Him. This and the the various miracles which the Blessed Rasul (SallAllaahu alayhi wasallam) has informed us about may sound incredulous, it should be borne in mind that if at the hands of human beings such feats are created that boggle the mind, how much more powerful is the Creator of such beings. The Ambiyaa- Prophets came to declare the truth and spoke the truth and lived the truth. As “Hercules the Great”, the ruler of the Byzantine Empire, said,
“He who does not lie to the people nor deceive them; not even for a split second, he can not attribute anything false to Allaah, nor will he ever have the courage to speak a lie.”
If man-made chemical-compounds can stop someone from burning, how much more powerful is the Being who protected Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)’s body from the fire. The only difference is that whereas man is dependant on one chemical or another, the Omnipotent Allaah only has to say “BE” and it is. Furthermore, this miracle was performed not to boast about a personal ability or feat, but for the benefit of Mankind, so that they may realise the truthfulness of a Nabi and be saved from falsehood.
In spite of all these miracles, none of the people except Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)’s wife Sarah (RadhiAllaahu-anha) and his cousin Hadhrat Loot (Alaihis-Salaam) believed. Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) decided to migrate to another place to spread the Deen-religion of Allaah.
“Indeed I will go to my Allaah who will guide me.”

Migration
Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) left his father, Aazar and his people and migrated to a place west of the Euphrates river, which was known as “oorkald ineeyouen”. He stayed there for a few years with Hadhrat Loot (Alaihis-Salaam) and Hadhrat Sarah (RadhiAllaahu-anha). Then he headed for “Harran”, where he preached the true Deen . He continually begged Allaah Ta’aala to forgive his father. In spite of Aazar’s hostile behaviour, Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) promised him that he will continue to pray for his forgiveness.
Finally Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) was informed through “Wahi” -Divine Revelation- that Aazar was not from among the believers. He was from among those whom,
“Allaah has set a seal upon their hearts and their hearing. And upon their eyes is a cover.”
When Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) was informed of this, he freed himself of the responsibility of Aazar.

Migration to Palestine
Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) continued to travel and preach Islaam. Eventually he reached Palestine. He was accompanied by his wife and Hadhrat Loot (Alaihis-Salaam). Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) settled in the west of Palestine, which was under the power of the Canaanians. Thereafter he resided for a short while in “Shakeem” (Nablus). He continued his travels until he reached Egypt.
The Matter of Hadhrat Sarah (RadhiAllaahu-anha)
It is mentioned in a Hadith, that while Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) was travelling to Egypt, before reaching the border he told Hadhrat Sarah (RadhiAllaahu-anha),
“The king of this place is a tyrant. He captures any beautiful woman he sees. If he finds the woman’s husband with her then he kills the husband. But if he finds that it is some other friend, then he does not raise any objections. Besides you and I, there are no any other Muslims in this place, so you are my sister in Islaam. You must tell him: ‘This is my Brother’.”
All went according to plan. At night when the king tried his evil advances, his hands became paralysed. The king told Hadhrat Sarah (RadhiAllaahu-anha),
“Pray to your Rabb that my hand heals. I will leave you alone.”
Hadhrat Sarah (RadhiAllaahu-anha) prayed to Allaah Ta’aala, and he was cured. But once again he tried his evil advances. Again his hand became paralysed. This happened thrice. Then he said:“It seems as though this is a jinn, not a human. Take her away.”
So relieved was he at being cured and so foolish, that instead of believing in her Rabb, he sent her away with Hadhrat Haajira (RadhiAllaahu-anha) as a gift. Hadhrat Sarah (RadhiAllaah-anha) took Hadhrat Haajira (RadhiAllaah-anha) and returned to Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam), who enquired what had transpired. Hadhrat Sarah (RadhiAllaah-anha) congratulated him and said,
“All praise be to Allaah Ta’aala, he as saved us from that wicked person and granted you another servant.”
This incident is narrated in many Ahadith.

Explaining the term “SIDEEQ” Truthfulness
Truthfulness is an unquestionable quality of the Ambiyaa (Alaihis-Salaam). Furthermore, the fact that the Qur’aan has mentioned Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)’s great qualities is proof enough of his greatness and there is no doubt about it.
“And mention You in the book of Ebrahim. Indeed he was a “Sadeeq” (a man of truth), a Nabi-prophet.”
“And mention You in the book of Ebrahim. Indeed he was a “Sadeeq” (a man of truth), a Nabi-prophet.”
[Maryam-41]
The term “Siddeeq” is an amplified tense of the word “sidq” (truthfulness). That person is called “Siddeeq” who has this quality in his very soul. Islaam is based on the innocence of the Ambiyaa- prophets.
Hadhrat Haajira (RadhiAllaah-anha)’s rank
The following has been mentioned in the Ahaadith,
“Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam); his wife, Hadhrat Sarah (RadhiAllaah-anha) and Hadhrat Loot (Alaihis-Salaam) were travelling through Egypt. The Egyptian Royal family at that time were Semitic (the descendants of Hadhrat Nooh (Alaihis-Salaam)’s son Saam (Shem). Therefore they were related to Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam). Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) must have met the Pharaoh, who honoured him because of his eminent family of prophets. While entertaining his noble guests, the Pharaoh not only showered them with gifts, but according to prevailing custom, also gifted his daughter, Haajira in marriage . According to the customs of that era, the younger bride had to serve the elder wife.”
According to the authentic Jewish traditions, Hadhrat Haajira (RadhiAllaah-anha) is mentioned as a princess of Egypt, and not a slave girl.
According to an authentic commentator of the Tauraat,
When the Pharaoh saw the Karaamat (miracles) of Hadhrat Sarah (RadhiAllaah-anha), he said:
“It is better for my daughter to serve this great woman, than to stay in any other house.”
Because Hadhrat Haajira (RadhiAllaah-anha) left her home and made hijrat with Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) and Hadhrat Sarah (RadhiAllaah-anha), she was called “Haajira” (the one who made hijrat).
In Surah Moomtahinaah a special prayer of Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) is mentioned,
“Oh our Rabb! do not make us a trial for the disbelievers.”

[Moomtahinaah-5)
The question arises that what is meant by “fitnah’ (A trial) in this prayer?
Literally speaking the word “fitnah” means test or trial. Therefore the difficulties and trials a mo’min encounters are known as “fitnahs”. In the Qur’aan, wealth, children, fame and rank are called “fitnahs”, because it is through these mediums that the Imaan of a Muslim is tested.
The Ulama have explained that Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) prayed to Allaah Ta’aala,
Do not leave us in the hands of the infidels to be tormented. Because they will torture us in various ways, in order to make us forsake Islaam, which will in turn cause them to go astray.
Such was the eminence and benevolence of this Nabi that he requested Allaah Ta’aala not to allow the people to become involved in such tyranny, which deprives them of the Mercy of Allaah Ta’aala.

Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)’s prayer in Surah Shuraah.
In Surah Shuraah the following prayer of Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) is mentioned:
“(Oh my Allaah) do not humiliate me on the day when people will be revived.”
“(Oh my Allaah) do not humiliate me on the day when people will be revived.”
[Shuraah]
It is mentioned in a Hadith:
“On the day of Qiyamaat Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) will see his father dishevelled and his face blackened. He will say to Allaah Ta’aala,
“Oh my Allaah in the world You accepted my prayer (that You will not disgrace me).”
Allaah Ta’aala will reply,
“Oh Ebrahim, I have made Jannat unlawful for the infidels.”

Allaah Ta’aala will reply,
“Oh Ebrahim, I have made Jannat unlawful for the infidels.”
[Bukhari-Kitaab-ut-Tafseer]
Hafiz ibne Hajar(RA) has explained this,
“In the Qur’aan, among the special qualities of Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) this quality is mentioned: ‘Indeed, Ebrahim was soft-hearted and forbearing’.”
Therefore on the Day of Qiyamaat, upon seeing Aazar in such a helpless state, Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)’s gentle nature will be overcome. Although he will be aware of the situation, but his mercy is such that he will once again be prepared to beg for Aazar’s forgiveness. He will request Allaah Ta’aala on behalf of that prayer which was accepted in this world. But Allaah Ta’aala will reply,
“I have made Jannat-paradise unlawful for the disbelievers.”
Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) will be reminded,
“This is not the place of effort but the day of requital (reward and punishment). Today the scales are set up. My unchangeable law is that the idolaters and infidels shall never be accommodated in Jannat. And the disgrace of an idolater cannot be attributed to a mo’min, no matter how close the worldly relationship may be.”

An Important Incident
Although Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) firmly believed that everything was connected to and controlled by Allaah Ta’aala, he did not rest there. He wished to find out the reality of each thing, to understand how it was connected to Allaah Ta’aala.
Although he had ”Ilm-ul-Yaqeen”, he wished to have “Haqqui-Yaqeen”. *If a person merely attains the knowledge of something it is called “ilm-ul-Yaqeen”. If he gets to see, touch, smell the object etc. it is called “Ain-ul-Yaqeen”. When he is thoroughly acquainted with all the intricacies of the subject it is called “Haqqul-Yaqeen”.
Therefore he requested Allaah Ta’aala to show him how Allaah Ta’aala revived the dead. Allaah Ta’aala asked him,
“Don’t you believe in life after death?”
Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) immediately replied,
“Yes I most certainly believe in it. But I wish to see it in order to have a more profound understanding.”
Thereupon Allaah Ta’aala consented and instructed,
Behold! Ebrahim said: “My Rabb show me how You give life to the dead.” Allaah said: “Do You not then believe.” He said: “Yes; but to satisfy my own understanding.” Allaah said: “Take four birds; tame them to turn to you ‘ put a portion of them on every hill, and call to them; they will come to thee (flying) with speed. Then know that Allaah is Exalted in Power, Wise.” [260]
Take a few birds, cut them into pieces and put them on a nearby mountain. Then stand a little distance away and call them.
Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) did as he was commanded. When he called them, all the organs at once assembled together and they came running to him. This incident is mentioned in Surah Baqarah.

Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam)’s Children
At the birth of his eldest son Hadhrat Ismaeel (Alaihis-Salaam), Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) was 87 years old. At the birth of Hadhrat Ishaaq (Alaihis-Salaam), he was 100 years old. Besides Hadhrat Sarah and Haajira (RadhiAllaah-anha), he also had a third wife, who bore him 6 sons. The progeny of these 6 sons were known as “Bani Karoora”. Hadhrat Ebrahim (Alaihis-Salaam) lived upto the age of 175. He was buried in Jerusalem.
LESSONS WE LEARN
1. Hadhrat Ebrahim (AS) is one of the four great Ambiyaa. Hadhrat Muhammad (SAW),Hadhrat Moosa (AS) and Hadhrat Isa (AS) are the other three.
2. Some Ambiyaa(AS) lived during the same era.
2. Allaah does whatever He wants. He creates a Nabi from an idol worshipping father and from darkness comes light.
3. That which is itself dependent cannot be worthy of worship. Only Allaah is independent and worthy of worship.
4. Truth has to be stated even if it goes against ones parents, kith and kin, family or friends.
5. Truth has to be declared with wisdom and foresight. One cannot bully people into accepting the truth.
6. Praying for the guidance of non-believing living parents etc. is permissible.
7. Hadhrat Ebrahim(AS) preached Islaam – the worship and obedience to one Allaah.
8. Adhering to the ways, customs and rituals of the forefathers without any Shar’i sanction is misleading even today.
9. That which is created can never equal to the Creator-Allaah.
10. Life and death, happiness and sadness, health and illness, success and failure, honour and disgrace are all in the sole control of Allaah, The One.
11. Hadhrat Ebrahim (AS) addressed the stars, the moon and the sun as a lesson to his people by way of illustration.
12. Allaah was, is and will remain.
13. Hadhrat Ebrahim(AS) said that the big idol broke the others in order to explain the futility of the trust they had placed in the idols.
14. Simple proofs are sufficient for those who sincerely seek the truth, but once a person does not desire to accept the truth, a mountain of truth will not move him.
15. The forces of Kufr, Shirk, evil, falsehood are one when it comes to destroy and harm Islaam, the Muslims and Haqq.
16. Allaah grants success with or without means.
17. Everything is solely and totally in Allaah’s control. Allaah can make burning fire cool if He so desires. Allaah has ultimate control over everything He has created, and indeed, Allaah has created everything.
18. Miracles at the hands of Ambiyaa(AS) are a proof of their Nabuwwat and NOT proof of DIVINITY.
19. In Hijrat-(migration) is Nusrat-(unseen help of Allaah). 20. It is permissible to use words or statements which have dual meaning to protect one’s life, dignity and honour.
20. Life and death, granting of children even in old age, and removing of calamities are only in the Hands of Allaah.
