Forty Ahaadith on the recitation and teaching of the Noble Qur’aan
This is a compilation of forty Ahaadith on the recitation and teaching of the Noble Qur’aan.
The original was written in Arabic by Allaamah Mullah Ali Sultaan Muhammed Al-Qaari(Rahmatullahi alaiyh). The Urdu Translation, references and commentary were written by Moulana Dr. Muhammad Habibullaah Mukhtaar.(Rector of Jaamia Islaamiah, Karachi Newtown) . Translated into English by Mufti A.H.Elias.
1. The Best Person.
Hadhrat Uthmaan bin Afaan (Radhiallahu anhu) narrates that the Merciful Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “The best person from you is that person who learns the Noble Qur’aan and teaches it to others.” (Narrated by Ahmed and companions in six reliable books.). It has been recorded in Ibne Maja by Hadhrat Saad(Radhiallahu anhu) the words “from amongst you, the most superior person” have been narrated. and in Ibne Abo Dawood the words “from amongst you the best person is he who recites the Noble Qur’aan and makes others to recite…” have been narrated by Hadhrat Ibne Masood (Radhiallahu anhu).
Commentary:
The Noble Qur’aan is the speech of Allaah Ta’aala. Since it is obvious that Allaah Ta’aala is the Greatest, so is His Speech. Whosoever will learn it, read it or teach it will be the highest and most superior. This does not mean that a Haafiz or Qaari is superior to an Aalim or a Faqeeh (Juro -consultant). It refers to that Qaari or Haafiz who recites the Noble Qur’aan with Qiraat and who has the knowledge of the Ahaadith of Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam), and is aware of the commandments of the Deen. In the earlier ages a Qaari was an Aalim and a Faqeeh as well.
2. Reward for every letter.
It is reported from Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Mas’ood (Radhiallahu anhu) that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) stated that “Whosoever read one letter from the Kitaab of Allaah (Qur’aan), will be granted one reward for it and one is equal to ten. I do not say that Aleeef, Laam, Meem is one letter but Aleef is one letter, Laam is one letter and Meem is one letter. ” ( Narrated by Tirmidhi – Hasan Sahih ).
Commentary:
Subhaanallaah! What a great blessing that just by reciting three letters in a few moments, one earns thirty rewards and this is the lowest of stages where one earns ten rewards for one good. Furthermore, Allaah Ta’aala increases His bounties as much as He desires according to the sincerity and devotion of His servants. The Haafiz gains reward upon reward for the Aakhirat by endeavouring to make it a habit to recite the Qur’aan regularly so that the whole Qur’aan is recited at least once per month.
3. The Kitaab that Elevates and Humbles.
Hadhrat Umar bin Khattaab (Radhiallahu anhu) reports that Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said that Allaah, the Lofty One, by means of this Kitaab, elevates many and lowers many. (Narrated by Muslim and Ibne Maja).
Commentary:
In every age, the Ulema, Fuqahaa, and the knowledge bearers of the Noble Qur’aan have been granted dignity and honour. Allaah grants honour to those who recite the Noble Qur’aan, act upon it’s commandments and make it their guide. Allaah says:-
Allaah Ta’aala increases the status of those amongst you who have brought Imaan and (to those ) who have been given Ilm.
One should also realise that to recite the Qur’aan and then to be misled or to recite the Qur’aan and not to act upon it is the cause of destruction and ruin. It is extremely unfortunate to abstain from reading and gaining celestial light from such a light as the Qur’aan. A person who earns humiliation in this world through his neglect of the Qur’aan, can imagine how much more deprived he will be in the Aakhiraat.
4. Those busy with the Qur’aan and those who supplicate.
Hadhrat Abu Sa’eed Khudri (Radhiallahu anhu) states that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) stated that Allaah, the Lofty, said: That person who the Noble Qur’aan prevented (because of his preoccupation with it) from making my Zhikr and from making Duaa, I will grant him better than those who beseech me and the Kalaam (speech) of Allaah is superior to all other speeches just as Allaah has superiority over all the creation.
Commentary:
That person who was unable to make Zhikr of Allaah Ta’aala or to beseech Allaah Ta’aala for his needs because he was engaged in the recitation of the Qur’aan or in explaining it’s commandments or in comprehending the details of it’s message and meaning, then Allaah Ta’aala fulfils his needs without him even asking for such fulfilment, for Allaah is the Knower of the Unseen and He knows what is in each person’s heart and what each person’s needs are. Allaah, the Rabb of the Qur’aan, will definitely fulfil the needs of one who has become Allaah’s and who has given up his time and has devoted himself for the sake of Allaah’s Kalaam.
5. The example of one who recites the Qur’aan.
Hadhrat Abu Musa Ash’ari (Radhiallahu anhu) stated that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said :” That Momin who recites the Noble Qur’aan is like citron, the fragrance of which is good and the taste of which is excellent. That Momin who does not recite the Noble Qur’aan is like dates which does not have a fragrance but which has a sweet taste. That Munaafiq who recites the Qur’aan is like a flower which has a good fragrance but which tastes bitter. That Munaafiq who does not recite the Qur’aan is like the aloe, which does not have a fragrance and has a bitter taste. In one narration, the word Faajir (transgressor) is used instead of Munaafiq. (Narrated by Ahmed, Bukhaari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi, Nisai and Ibn Maja.)
Commentary:
That Momin who recites the Qur’aan, acts upon it’s commandments, and teaches it to others is like citron. Externally it is pleasant and internally as well. Such a Muslim becomes a source of good and directs towards good actions. Those in the company of such a Muslim benefit from his teachings and through his example. His speech, public life as well as his seclusion are a source of goodness to all those around him.
That Momin who does not recite the Noble Qur’aan, does not attract the people towards any good and thus the comparison to something without a fragrance, but because he has Imaan, he carries the potential and the inner essence to change and do good. This is why the comparison to the sweet taste.
That Munaafiq who recites the Noble Qur’aan may attract people towards him but because of the fickleness of his intention, his recitation will not bring about much good. That Munaafiq who does not recite the Qur’aan has neither the ability to bring anyone towards good nor has any good within himself and thus he has no good whatsoever and is therefore most harmful.
6. Good and pious companionship.
Hadhrat Anas (Radhiallahu anhu) stated that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said : “The Momin who recites the Noble Qur’aan is like the citron which has a nice fragrance and good taste, and the similitude of a Momin who does not recite the Noble Qur’aan is like the date which does not have any fragrance and it’s taste is good, and the Faajir (transgressor) who recites the Noble Qur’aan is like a flower which has a good fragrance and tastes bitter, and that Faajir who does not recite the Qur’aan is like the colocynth, which has no fragrance and a bitter taste, and the similitude of a pious , righteous companion is like one (selling) musk – in that even if you do not receive any portion of it, you will still be able to smell it’s fragrance , and the similitude of a bad companion is like a blacksmith – even if the soot does not touch you, the smoke will reach you. (Narrated by Abu Dawood.)
Commentary:
An excellent similitude has been illustrated concerning good and bad company. It proves the effect that people have upon you even if you do not indulge completely in their habits. A good person does not have to spell it out to you but you will learn some good from him. The desire to do good increases and one feels content in doing good. Similarly, evil and bad companions will taint you even though you do not actually touch them. The darkness of their ways can blemish you just by being in their company. By being in the company of an evil person, the bad that he indulges in seems good for a few dangerous moments and this can lead to untold misery and hardship which can take a lifetime to undo.
7. Those who recite Qur’aan proficiently and those who read with difficulty.
Hadhrat Ayesha (Radhiallahu anha) stated that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said that the one who recites the Qur’aan Kareem proficiently will be with Kiraamin Kaatibeen, and that person who reads the Qur’aan with difficulty – stopping and stammering – but is enthusiastic and keen to recite, will get double the reward. In one narration, it is stated that the one who recites the Qur’aan with difficulty will get double the reward. (Narrated by Bukhaari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi, Nisai and Ibne Maja.)
Commentary:
Those who recite the Qur’aan with fluency and without any difficulty, will be with those angels which have proximity to Allaah in the Aakhiraat. They will be His companions. Just as these angels were obedient and conformed to the laws and were appointed to read and write and just as they did not add or subtract, they will also be classified as Haafiz and Qaaris. They read and teach. But those who stammer and read, and who withstands the difficulty in reading and reads constantly although he experiences difficulty in gaining fluency, he will gain one reward for reading and the other for withstanding the difficulty experienced in reading. This does not imply that the one who reads with fluency is inferior in any way. It just emphasises that despite not reading as fluently as the one who reads easily, he will get the same reward for the difficulty experienced in trying to read correctly.
8. The root of all affairs.
Hadhrat Abu Dharr (Radhiallahu anhu) said “I asked Rasulullaah(Sallallahu alayhi wasallam), Oh Rasulullaah, Advise me.” Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said “Choose Taqwa (piety), for piety is the root of all affairs.” I said “Oh Rasulullaah, advise me more.” Rasulullaah(Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said,” Make the recitation of the Noble Qur’aan compulsory, for it will be Noor(Celestial light) for you in this world and will become a Noor in the sky as well.
(Narrated by Ibne Habbaan and classified reliable in a lengthy hadith and related by Ibne Zarees and Abu Yala from Abi Saeed.)
In the narration of Hadhrat Abu Saeed, it is narrated as “choose the fear and Taqwa of Allaah, for it is the root of everything, and make compulsory the Dhikr of Allaah and the recitation of the Qur’aan, for it is a means to become for you a Noor on earth and a good remembrance in the skies, and control your tongue except for the speaking of good by which you will overpower Shaitaan
Commentary:
In this Hadith, one is ordered to choose Taqwa for it is the root of all affairs and the basis of everything good. Due to the fear , awe and trust in Allaah, one automatically refrains from all evil and detested things, and becomes closer to Allaah instead. The recitation of the Qur’aan Kareem illuminates man’s heart and enlightens his brain. When the heart is filled with Noor, then doing good and obeying Allaah’s commands becomes easy and enjoyable. The brain is directed towards understanding things in reality and not as Shaitaan would like it to be. A person who reaches this state by following the simple to understand advice of Nabi(S.A.W) is not only loved by the people but by the Almighty Himself.
Due to the errors of the tongue many tribulations occur on earth. Not only does such a person destroy his peace in this world, but his Aakhiraat is also spoilt. This leads one directly to Jahannam, the torments of which begin in this very world. If one controls the tongue, then one controls Shaitaan. Otherwise it can sting like a serpent. Due to the evils committed with the tongue, many great horsemen and brave men have been annihilated and ruined.
In order to save the tongue from falling into various traps, man must at all times keep it engaged in the Zhikr of Allaah. This brings tranquillity to all the other parts of the body. Besides the various good it brings one in this world, so much reward is gained for the Aakhiraat , where nothing but good deeds will be needed to earn Allaah’s Mercy and Pleasure.
9. That which leads to Jannat.
Hadhrat Jaabir (Radhiallahu anhu) narrated from Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) that the Qur’aan Kareem is such an intercessor whose intercession is accepted and such a defender whose word is ceded to. Whosoever makes it one’s Imaam (leader, keeps it ahead and gives it priority), it will take him to Jannat, and whosoever puts it over his back, (keeps it behind and neglects it) it will drag him into Jahannam.(Narrated by Ibne Habbaan in his Sahih and Baihaiqi in Shuba and Ibne Mas’ood).
Commentary:
Whosoever recites the Qur’aan Kareem and acts upon it’s commands and conveys it to others, will have the Qur’aan as an interceder for him, which Allaah will definitely accept. To keep the Qur’aan in front means to give it preference over lesser things. On the other hand, he who neglects it by ignoring it’s commands and by going against them, will earn Jahannam.
10. The intercession of the Qur’aan Kareem.
Hadhrat Abu Amamata Bahili (Radhiallahu anhu) says that he heard Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) say that Recite the Qur’aan Kareem, because on the Day of Qiyaamat it will intercede for it’s reciters. (Narrated by Muslim).
Commentary:
The Qur’aan Kareem will intercede for those who recite it. It is thus wise to become habitual in reciting the Qur’aan. Read it daily and act upon it’s commands. Remember that whoever the Qur’aan intercedes for, Allaah will not reject it’s intercession.
11. A Crown brighter than the sun.
Hadhrat Sahl bin Maaz Juhni (R.A.) narrates from his father that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: Whosoever read the Qur’aan and acted upon whatever is in it, then on the day of Qiyaamat, his parents will be made to wear such a crown which will be brighter than this sun which is present in your homes. Tell me what is your opinion concerning the one who also acts upon it. (Narrated by Abu Dawood and Hakimi who said it has a reliable chain of narrators.).
Commentary:
Not only do the Hafiz and the Qaari benefit by reciting the Qur’aan Kareem, but their parents also benefit. On the day of Qiyaamat, they will be honoured by Allaah Himself by being adorned with shining crowns. One can thus imagine how much greater is the reward and honour for the one who reads, teaches and acts upon the commands of the Qur’aan. What glad tidings for those who are themselves Haafiz and who make their children do likewise. They are the ones who have gained both in this world and in the Aakhiraat.
12. Crown and Clothing.
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (Radhiallahu anhu) stated that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said :Whosoever read the Qur’aan, learnt it and acted upon it, his parents will be made to wear a crown which will glitter like the light of the sun and they will be made to wear such clothing which is more rich than the garments of the entire world. They will then inquire as to why they are being so adorned. They will be informed that their son memorised the Qur’aan Kareem. (Narrated by Hakeem : Reliable on the conditions of Muslim.)
Commentary:
In various Ahaadith, various rewards have been mentioned concerning the parents of the Haafiz and the Qaari. In this Hadith the wearing of outstanding robes has been mentioned.
13. Pleasure of Allaah Ta’aala
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (Radhiallahu anhu) states that Rasulullaah (S.A.W) said “On the Day of Qiyaamat, the one of the Qur’aan will come .Then Qur’aan will beseech:”Oh Rabb, Adorn him.” Thus he will be made to wear the crown of dignity and honour. The Qur’aan Kareem will say:”Honour him more.” Thus he will be made to wear garments of honour and dignity. The Qur’aan Kareem will say:”Be pleased with him”. Thus Allaah will be pleased with him. Then it will be said to the one of the Qu’raan, “Keep reading and reach the lofty status and on every aayat, one reward will be increased. (Narrated by Tirmidhi and Ibne Huzaimah and Hakeem.)
Commentary:
Subhaanallaah! How fortunate are the reciters and teachers of the Qur’aan who obey its commands as well. Not only will they be adorned in such an honourable way, but Allaah will be pleased with them. What a greater reward can anyone desire?
14. Status.
Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Umar and Abdullaah bin Aas (Radhiallahu anhum) say that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) stated:”It will be said to the reciter of the Qur’aan Kareem, “You read and reach (the lofty position), and read with Tajweed and Tahleel (correct , clear and distinct) as you read in the world, because your abode will be (the height reached) with the recital on the last aayat you read.
(Narrated by Tirmidhi, Ibne Huzaimah and Hakeem and said that the chain of narrators are reliable.)
Commentary:
Allamah Kathbi (R.A.) writes that there are as many stages in Jannat as the number of aayats in the Qur’aan. Whoever recites the entire Qur’aan will reach the highest stage of Jannat and whoever reads less will attain that stage upto which he has read.
15. Deserving of “ghibta”
Hadhrat Ibne Umar (Radhiallahu anhu) stated that Rasulullaah (S.AW.) said: “Hasad (Jealousy meaning Ghibta) is not proper except for two persons. One is the person whom Allaah Ta’aala has given this Kitaab (Qur’aan) and he recites it day and night, and one is the person whom Allaah Ta’aala has given wealth and he spends it day and night. (narrated by Bukhaari and Muslim.)
Commentary:-
The word “hasad” literally means the desire that which one is jealous about should be taken away from the person to whom it belongs and given to the one who is jealous. Since this type of jealousy is abhorred and prohibited, the Ulemah have stated that “hasad” should be interpreted as “ghibta” in this Hadith, which means the person desires that the possessor of the good should not be deprived of it but the one desiring it should also have it. Ghibta should be made for all blessed things. This is praiseworthy.
16. Envy for Good.
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (Radhiallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:”Gibta is not proper but on two persons. One who Allaah Ta’aala taught the Qur’aan and he recites it day and night, through which his neighbour hears and says:”How I wish that I had such a gift and I could also act likewise.” One is the person whom Allaah Ta’aala has given wealth and who spends it on permissible places such that a person looks at this and says :”How I wish that I had wealth like him so that I could also spend it in abundance. (on good). (narrated by Bukhaari).
Commentary:
Generally their is a negative impression about wealth but wealth can be a great blessing if it is used properly. To spend on good necessary items and for the poor and the less fortunate creates alot of rewards for the giver and is worthy of being imitated and desired after.
17. Three persons.
Hadhrat Ibne Umar (Radhiallahu anhu) says that Rasulullaah (S.A.W.) stated that the great fear and awe will not cause them fear (in the Aakhirat) and there will be no accountability for them. They will be seated on hillocks of musk until the accountability of the creation is complete. One is that person who recites the Qur’aan for the pleasure of Allaah Ta’aala and who makes Imaamat for the nation such that they are happy with him; and that Muazzin who gives Azaan for the pleasure of Allaah Ta’aala; and that slave who also acts (behaves) properly and maintains a good relationship between himself and his master. (Tabaraani)
In the commentary of Mujeem Kaabir lil Tabaraani, it is related as “Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu anhu) says :”If I did not hear Rasulullaah(Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) say it not once or twice but I have counted him saying it upto seven times, I should not have narrated it.”
In Jami Sagheer these words of Mujeem Kaabir are:- “On the day of Qiyaamat, three persons will be seated on hillocks of musk. They will have no fear, no awe or anxiety, nor will they be afraid (shocked). They will remain there until people are completed with accountability. One is that person who learnt how to recite the Qur’aan and recites it for the pleasure of Allaah. One is that person who calls the Azaan day and night for the five daily salaat for the reward and pleasure of Allaah. And one person is that slave who is not neglectful in his obedience to his Rabb despite being a slave (obedient) to the world.”
Commentary:
The blessing of being able to sit on mounds of musk when the rest of the creation is engrossed frightened and some in a state of remorse and panic because of the greatest of all Account taking is indeed great. The relief which such a reward grants will only be realised on the day of Accountability. Such a blessing should be grabbed with both hands. The Loftiness of the words of Allaah give tranquillity to the reciter in this world and in the Aakhiraat . May Allaah create a craving in our hearts to attain such great rewards.
18. The Blessing of Hifz-e-Qur’aan.
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (Radhiallahu anhu) says that once Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) wanted to despatch a Jamaat of a few persons. He inquired from each of them about the extent of their knowledge of the Qur’aan. From amongst them came the turn of a young person. He (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said :”…how much of the Qur’aan have you learnt?.” The youth replied about the various Surahs he had learnt and mentioned Surah Baqarah. Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) asked:” Do you know Surah Baqarah? ” The youth confirmed this. Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:”You be their Amir”. From amongst those who had given excuses for not knowing Surah Baqarah, one of them said:”By Allaah, The only thing that prevented me from learning Surah Baqarah is that I would not be able to fulfil it’s right.”
Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:” Learn the Qur’aan Kareem and recite it, for the one who learns the Qur’aan Kareem, reads it and acts upon it, is like a(open) bag which is filled with musk such that it’s fragrance spreads wherever it is. The example of one who learns (the Qur’aan) and sleeps is like a bag of musk which has been tied at the top.(Narrated by Tirmidhi, Hassen, briefly in Ibne Maja and Ibne Habbaan in his Sahih ).
Commentary:
Thus far we have learnt how the reciter of the Qur’aan benefits himself and his parents in the Aakhiraat . In this Hadith we learn how the reciter of the Qur’aan benefits those ho listen to him by creating within them a desire to do likewise. Two types of reciters are described here. The one who acts upon what he reads is likened to a bag of musk which is open, because the fragrance (effect) of his good spreads far and wide. The one who recites and sleeps is likened to a bag of musk which, although it possesses such a good fragrance, it is not open and therefore the beauty and goodness remains confined to one person only. This teaches us about the benefits and greatness of reciting the Qur’aan. It also teaches the reciters of this Noble Book that by not acting upon it’s beautiful just laws, so much of it’s fragrance is kept restricted and limited. This Hadith is an inspiration to those who recite it, to act upon it as well.
19. Nabuwwat in the chest (bosom).
Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Umar (Radhiallahu anhu) said that Rasulullaah(Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) stated : The one who reads the Qur’aan has entered Nabuwwat in his chest. although one thing no Wahi (Divinely protected revelation) comes to him. The one who recites and teaches the Qur’aan should not fight with a quarrelsome one, nor should he reproach an ignorant with ignorance when in his (the reciters) abdomen, he has the Kalaam (speech) of Allaah Ta’aala. (Narrated by Hakim by a reliable chain of narrators).
Commentary:
The Qur’aan is that which was revealed to Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam). The one who learns it has absorbed the Wahi-e-ilaahi(revelation of Allaah) and Nabuwwat (i.e. the teachings of the All Mighty) is present in his heart although he cannot become a Nabi because Nabuwwat has terminated.
The one who has the Qur’aan in his chest (heart) should not quarrel, fight or use abusive language. The Qur’aan stands for all that is good and therefore, abusive ways do not mix with the advice of the Qur’aan just as oil and water do not mix. The holder of such goodness as is in the Qur’aan should try to inculcate within himself the beautiful character of Nabi (S.A.W) and the pious predecessors.
20. The intercession of the Fast and the Qur’aan-e-Kareem.
Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Umar (Radhiallahu anhu) states that Rasulullaah(Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:”Fasting and the Qur’aan Kareem will intercede for the servant (of Allaah) . The Fast will say:”Oh my Rabb, I prevented him from eating and drinking during the day so accept my intercession concerning him.” The Qur’aan will say:” I prevented him from sleeping so accept my intercession concerning him.” Consequently, the intercession of these two will be accepted.
(Narrated by Ahmed and Ibne Abi Dunya in Kitaabul Joo and by Tabraani in Al-Kaaabir and Haakim on the conditions of Muslim )
Commentary:
Fasting and the Qur’aan will intercede on behalf of those who upheld their rights and carried out Allaah’s commands concerning them. For every sacrifice of Man, even if it does not put him through excessive pain and suffering, Allaah grants a befitting reward. The acceptance of such a great intercession is to be sought after by all those who realise the agony of the Last Day and who love their Rabb.
21.The Most beneficial thing.
Hadhrat Abu Zarr (Radhiallahu anhu) stated that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said that you cannot return to Allaah with anything better than the Qur’aan, which has been created by Him and which has been made apparent by Him.(Narrated by Hakeem and Abu Dawood.)
Commentary:
It is narrated in one Hadith that nothing has as much proximity to Allaah as does the Quir’aan. The words “made apparent” means being revealed to Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam), or that Allah has granted Man the ability to articulate it and to preserve it in his chest (heart). Some elders have said that it meant the commentary and commands of Allaah Ta’aala or that which emanates from the Qur’aan. Whichever interpretation one follows, there is always some blessing in Allaah having made the Qur’aan accessible and understandable to all mankind.
22. Special Servant.
Hadhrat Anas (Radhiallahu anhu) says that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:”Oh people, there are some special servants of Allaah Ta’aala. We inquired :”Who are these Oh! Rasulullaah? He said:”Those who memorise the Qur’aan Kareem are the special servants and friends of Allaah. (Narrated by Nisai, Ibne Maja, Hakeem.) Munzari says that it is reliable.
Commentary:
The special servants of Allaah are those friends of Allaah who are engaged in the service of Deen and in the recitation and teaching of the Qur’aan Kareem. Allaah Ta’aala makes them His special servants and close ones. They are counted amongst the friends of Allaah just as the people of Makkah are called the people (ones) of Allaah for they stay near the Baitullaah. We spend so much time and effort trying to be friendly with mortals like ourselves who can not benefit us much. It is much wiser to try and befriend the Greatest of all Helpers.
23. The blessings of the Qur’aan Kareem.
Hadhrat Ibne Abbaas (Radhiallahu anhu) says that whosoever recites the Qur’aan will not return to “Arszal Umoor”. This is what is meant by the Blessed saying .”Then they will fling bottom to bottom”
(i.e. except all those who recite the Qur’aan Kareem.)
(Narrated by Hakeem through a reliable chain of narrators.)
Commentary:
Those who teach and memorise the Qur’aan Kareem, Allaah Ta’aala does not impair their intellect and senses as they age but He maintains such servants with proper intellect, strength and good health.
24. Noblest of people.
Hadhrat Ibne Abbaas (Radhiallahu anhu) says that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said that the carriers of the Qur’aan Kareem ( i.e. those who memorise the Qur’aan) and those who engage in Ibaadat and stand in the night ( in prayer etc. ) are the most respected and noble people .
Commentary:
Carriers of the Qur’aan means those who recite, memorise and act upon the Qur’aan Kareem. Those who make Ibaadat at night means those who remain engaged in Tahajjud, Zikr, Tilaawat and in praising Allaah.
25. Not to make it a means of monetary gain.
Hadhrat Abdur-Rahmaan bin Shibul Ansaari(Radhiallahu anhu) narrates from Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) that keep reciting the Qur’aan Kareem and keep acting upon it. Do not abstain from it’s recitation, nor be extreme in doing so, nor make it a means of commerce and for increasing wealth.(Narrated by Ahmed and Abu Yala and Tabraani and Bayhaqi).
Commentary:
One should read the Qur’aan Shareef and refrain from neglecting it. One should also not reach such an extreme in reciting and teaching it, that other forms of Ibaadat (worship) are neglected in the process. The Qur’aan is a means of earning reward in the Aakhirat. It should not be used as a means for livelihood nor to amass wealth.
26. A Prophecy.
Hadhrat Imraan bin Hussein(Radhiallahu anhu) narrates that once he passed by a Qaari who recited the Qur’aan Shareef and thereafter began begging .Hadhrat Imraan Hussein read:
and then he said “I have heard from Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam), that whosoever reads the Qur’aan should only ask from Allaah Ta’aala , for shortly there will come such a nation who will recite the Qur’aan Kareem and ask from the people.” (narrated by Tirmidhi and classified as Hassan.)
Commentary:
Hadhrat Imraan (Radhiallahu anhu)’s reaction and reciting of ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
…………………after witnessing the Qaari’s behaviour expresses his sorrow at such an action. Instead of earning the Aakhirat through the Qur’aan Shareef, it is being used to earn and extra few pennies for the world. This illustrates to us that the reader of the Qur’aan should ask for all his needs only from Allaah Ta’aala, whether they pertain to the world or to the Aakhiraat- hereafter.
27. Reciting the Qur’aan sweetly.
Hadhrat Abu Hurairah(Radhiallahu anhu) says that Rasulullaah (S.A.W) stated that person is not amongst us who does not recite the Qur’aan with “Tagannoo” (sweetly). (Narrated by Bukhaari, Ahmed, Abu Dawood, Ibne Habbaan, Hakeem from Saeed).
Commentary:
In the Hadith, the word used is “Lam Yatahannoo”. Most Ulema state that this means that the one who does not recite “sweetly” is not one of us, or the one who because of his knowing the Qur’aan is not independent of others is not from us. The words “not of us” mean that he is not on our path, and is not acting upon our Sunnat.
To recite the Qur’aan Kareem in a sweet manner has an effect on the reciters inner self and on those listening to him. This does not mean that the laws of Tajweed should be overlooked. To recite contrary to the laws of Tajweed is prohibited. Hadhrat Abu Abeed (Radhiallahu anhu) states that the word “independent” either refers to independence from other books or the one whom the Qur’aan does not make independent and he does not have faith in the promise and warnings then he should not testify to it’s truthfulness. Allaamah Ibne Jauzi states that the meaning of “sweetness” has four connotations in zikr ;
1) good voice
2) to gain independence through it.
3) to be sorrowful
4) to shun other things through it.
Other Ulema state that it means to take pleasure and taste from it.
28. The punishment for making the Qur’aan a means of earning.
Hadhrat Buraidhah (Radhiallahu anhu) stated that Rasulullaah (S.AW.) said that the one who read the Qur’aan Kareem so as to take money from the people through it , will on the Day of Judgement be in such a condition that there will be no flesh on his face. (narrated by Bahaiqi).
Commentary:
The Qur’aan Kareem should not be used for monetary gain and begging.. To resort to this is to invite destruction and humiliation in the Aakhirat.
29. Status of the Qur’aan.
Hadhrat Ayesha (Radhiallahu anhu) narrates that the merciful Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said that to recite Qur’aan in Salaat is more superior than recitation outside Salaat which is more superior to reciting Subhaanallaah..AllaahuAkbar which is more superior than Sadaqah. Sadaqah is more superior than fasting and fasting is a shield from the fire of Jahannam. (narrated by Dare-Qutni in Alfurad and Baihiqi in Shuhbatul Imaan)
Commentary:
There are various stages of reciting the Qur’aan. Reciting it in Salaat is the most superior. No zikr or Tasbeeh is greater than Allaah’s Kalaam as contained in the Qur’aan. Sadaqah earns more reward than Fasting and Fasting is the shield for the fire of Jahannam. This illustrates clearly how much more can be achieved through the Qur’aan.
30. Reciting the Qur’aan Kareem while looking.
Hadhrat Uwais bin Abi Uwais Thafi (Radhiallahu anhu) narrates a “marfoo” hadith which states that by reciting the Qur’aan Kareem without looking into it earns a thousand stages reward and by reciting the Qur’aan Kareem while looking into it earns two thousand times more than that.(narrated by Tabraani and Baihiqi)
Commentary:
When one reads the Qur’aan while looking into it the tongue is engaged in Tilaawat ; the eyes are also performing an Ibaadat by looking into it; the hands by touching and holding it and the mind by pondering over it’s meaning and message. A person who recites without looking into the Qur’aan tends to recite faster and misses out on these things. Thus the greater reward.
31. How many days should one take to complete the Qur’aan.
Hadhrat Ibne Umar (Radhiallahu anhu) narrated in a “marfoo” hadith that the Qur’aan Kareem should be completed every month ; every twenty nights ; every ten days and every seven days. Do not complete it in less than that.
(narrated by Bukhaari, Muslim, Abu Dawood).
Commentary:
This hadith is mentioned very briefly. In the original “Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said “Complete the Qur’aan Kareem every month” I said that I have the ability to read more. Nabi(S.AW.) said ‘Complete it every twenty days………….” upto the end.
It is clear from this hadith that we should read as much as is comfortably possible and we should not rush through it. In one hadith it is stated that one who completed the Qur’aan in less than three days has not understood whilst reading. It is prohibited to recite very speedily, chewing, mincing and eating the words. Instead of earning reward, one will end up sinning.
32. To read the Qur’aan Kareem with understanding.
Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Umar (Radhiallahu anhu) says Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said :”Read the Qur’aan until it prevents you, and when it does not prevent you, then you are not reciting it.”(narrated by Dalaami in Musnad-e-Firdose)
Commentary :
This hadith means that we should recite the Qur’aan with understanding so that it prevents us from wrongdoing and act upon it’s commands. A person who recites the Qur’aan without understanding ; who does not act upon it’s commands; who does not abstain from it’s prohibitions, then his recitation and non recitation is equal. The purpose of reciting the Qur’aan is to do so correctly and to understand it’s commands and prohibitions and to ponder over it’s clear signs and warnings.
33. To read the Qur’aan Kareem with sorrow . ( in a sad tone )
Hadhrat Buraidah(Radhiallahu anhu) says that Rasulullaah(Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said recite the Qur’aan with sorrow for it was revealed with grief. ( narrated by Abu Yala, Tabrani in Aoosaat, Abu Naeem in Al -Hilaat)
Commentary
It is mentioned that Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (Radhiallahu anhu) read the Qur’aan in such a very painful manner. Such recitation creates softness of the heart. The words “revealed with grief” illustrate how the Qur’aan Kareem objected to Kufr, darkness and about the lies of the Kuffaar ; how it informed about the consequences of their arrogance, disobedience and evil; about those who are going to be punished in this world. Therefore, when reading the Qur’aan, one should ponder about the mentioned warnings, consequences, punishments etc. Such reminders have led many to shed tears of regret and prayers for forgiveness. This is a sign of sincerity and this leads to positive change.
34. Reciting the Qur’aan seriously.
Hadhrat Jundub (Radhiallahu anhu) says that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said Recite the Qur’aan Kareem until your heart is attached to it, but when the heart is not attached , then rise up. (Narrated by Ahmed, Bukhaari, Muslim, Nisai)
Commentary:
The Qur’aan should be read with respect and with a sincere desire to benefit from it. This can only be done if one focuses one’s attention towards this goal and reads with understanding so as to absorb it’s contents. When it is read without any enthusiasm and the correct focus, then the mind and the heart lingers elsewhere and only the tongue moves. When such a condition arises, then instead of continuing such Tilaawat, put the Qur’aan away and start reading again only when the mind is fresh and conscious of the greatness it is involved with.
36. Protection from punishment.
Hadhrat Abu Amama (Radhiallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said-Recite the Qur’aan Kareem, for Allaah Ta’aala will not punish that heart which protected the Qur’aan Kareem.(narrated by all.)
Commentary:
The protectors of the Qur’aan Kareem, are those who recite it, teach it, act upon it and who make others act upon it. These ones will not be punished. Hadhrat Sahl (Radhiallahu anhu) says “that the sign of the love of Allaah Ta’aala is to love the Qur’aan Kareem, and the sign of the love of the Qur’aan Kareem, is to love Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam), and the sign of the love of Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam), is to love the Ahaadith (his sayings) and Sunnat, and the sign of the love of the Sunnat is the love of the Aakhirat, and the sign of the love of the Aakhirat is to have enmity for the world and the sign of enmity towards the world is to take only that which is necessary.”
36. The Qur’aan Kareem makes one independent.
Hadhrat Anas (Radhiallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said The Qur’aan Kareem is so wealthy that after it, no need or poverty comes and besides it there is no means of supervision. (narrated by Abu Yala).
Commentary:
The Qur’aan Kareem enriches the heart of a Mo’min, thus the one who adheres to it and follows it’s commands will be independent of others. The celestial light (nur) of the Qur’aan Kareem saves him from destruction and calamity. The Qur’aan Kareem removes needs and poverty. Imaam Ghazzali (Radhiallahu anhu) writes that one person stalled at the door of Hadhrat Umar(Radhiallahu anhu) who said,”Oh you, have you migrated to Umar or to Allaah, the Lofty?. Recite the Qur’aan, it will make you independent of my door. That person went away. Hadhrat Umar(Radhiallahu anhu) later searched for him and saw him engaged in Ibaadat. He asked him :”What is the matter, you have gone far from us?.” He replied “I have read the Qur’aan Kareem. It has made me independent of Umar.” Hadhrat Umar(Radhiallahu anhu) asked :”What did you find in it.?” He replied:”
“In the sky is your provision and also that which has been promised to you.”
Upon hearing this Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu anhu) wept.
37. Reward for recitation of the Qur’aan.
Hadhrat Umar (Radhiallahu anhu) states that Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said that the Qur’aan Kareem has one million twenty seven thousand letters , thus that person who reads it with the intention of reward, with patience will receive in exchange for every letter, a wife from the big eyed damsels of Jannat. (narrated by Tabraani in Ausat )
Commentary:
Allaah, the Almighty possesses an infinite amount of bounties whom He bestows on His servants. There is no shortage in His treasury. He is Merciful and loves giving. He is the Best Giver. We do not even have to exert ourselves greatly in order to receive His abundant rewards.
38. Nur Mubeen and Zikr Hakeem.
One Sahaabi narrates from Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) that the Qur’aan Kareem is Nur-e-Mubeen (clear celestial light) and Zikr-e-Hakeem (Remembrance of the wise) and Siraatal Mustaqeem (the Straight Path).

Commentary:
The Qur’aan Kareem is an open light whose brightness reaches far and wide into the hearts of those who are sincere. It lights up the path towards righteousness and guidance. Zikr-e-Hakeem means that it provides sermons and advice, or that it’s aayats are of a decisive quality.
No doubt exists in it whatsoever. It is stated:
“This is a decisive Kitaab, then it’s contents have been elucidated. It is by One Who is Wise and Knowing.”
Whoever stands firmly on the Siraatal Mustaqeem will be successful and reach the desired destination.
39. The Qur’aan Kareem is a Medicine.
Hadhrat Ali(Radhiallahu anhu) stated that Rasulullaah(Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said that the Qur’aan Kareem is a medicine. (narrated by Qazzaii)
Commentary:
It is recorded in Ibne Maja that the Qur’aan Kareem is the best medicine. By medicine is meant that it is s treatment for the ailments of the inner self, such as the illness of the heart , the rectification of erroneous beliefs, doubts and imagination.
It also a cure for external ailments. It is stated :
“We have revealed the Qur’aan by which diseases are cured i.e. by which diseases are defended.
Many Aayats are so Powerful that by merely reciting them so many ailments have been cured and continue to be cured every day.
40. Hafiz -e-Quraan will be the chief of the Jannaties.
Hadhrat Anas (Radhiallahu anhu) narrates from Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam) that the one of the Qur’aan Kareem will be the “Arif” of the Jannaties. (narrated by Auzaai )
Commentary:
The Ulema, Huffaaz, those who act upon the commands of the Qur’aan Kareem will be the chiefs and guides of the Jannaties.”Arif” are those who are under the Imaam and Haakim (rulers) who have obtained a degree of governance.
Allaamah Munadi (Radhiallahu anhu) says from this we learn that there are stages in Jannat. Therein also are levels of rulers, and chiefs of all the people. Ambiyaa (AS) are the Imaams and guides of the people. Those who read, teach and act upon the Qur’aan Kareem are their deputies. They will guide the people . In this world they conveyed to the people the Deen, Qur’aan and Ahaadith brought by Rasulullaah (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam)to the people. They were Nabi(Sallallahu alayhi wasallam)’s heirs and deputies. So too will they be in the Aakhirat.
This is a status worth striving for and deserving of “ghibta”.Every true Muslim is eager to be an heir and deputy to Nabi S.A.W.). By following what we have learnt thus far we can obtain this worthy status.
May Allaah Ta’aala grant us all the ability to read with understanding, to teach to others and most of all to act upon the commands of the Qur’aan Kareem and to abstain from prohibited actions. May Allaah grant us the eagerness and enthusiasm to ponder and contemplate upon the open aayats so that they become an argument and proof for us. Aameen.
Hadhrat Sahl (Radhiallahu anhu) says :
“that the sign of the love of Allaah Ta’aala is to love the Qur’aan Kareem, and the sign of the love of the Qur’aan Kareem, is to love Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam), and the sign of the love of Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wasallam), is to love the Ahaadith (his sayings) and Sunnat, and the sign of the love of the Sunnat is the love of the Aakhirat, and the sign of the love of the Aakhirat is to have enmity for the world and the sign of enmity towards the world is to take only that which is necessary.”
